PSTN switch-off 2027: What your business needs to know (before it’s too late)

The UK’s traditional landline network - known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) - is being permanently switched off by January 2027.
That means big changes are coming for businesses still relying on analogue phone lines, fax machines, alarm systems, and older broadband connections like ADSL.
At Delta 365, we’re already helping businesses in Egham, Surrey, and surrounding areas get ready for this transition - and we’re here to help you too.
Why is the PSTN being switched off?
Let’s be honest - the PSTN has served us well for decades, but it’s old. It’s no longer fit for the way we communicate today. The infrastructure is outdated, costly to maintain, and can’t support modern technology.
That’s why telecom providers are moving everything over to digital - specifically VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), which runs phone systems over the internet.
The shift to VoIP offers:
Better call quality
More flexibility for remote and hybrid work
Lower costs for most businesses
Advanced features like voicemail-to-email, call forwarding, and more
Most businesses still aren’t ready
Despite the first announcement landing way back in 2017, and the original switch-off date set for December 2025, a surprising number of businesses still aren’t prepared.
In fact, only 18% of small businesses have made the move to a digital phone system — and worryingly, around 12% don’t even know the PSTN and ISDN networks are being phased out at all.
If that sounds familiar, don’t worry — you’re definitely not alone. But with the deadline fast approaching, now’s the time to start planning your move.
What does this mean for your business?
If your business is still using a traditional landline or an on-site PBX system, it’s time to start thinking ahead.
You may be affected if you use:
Analogue desk phones
Fax machines
Lift lines or entry systems
Alarm monitoring services
Broadband services that rely on phone lines (like ADSL or FTTC)
Not sure what you’re using? That’s okay — most of our clients didn’t either at first. We’ll help you figure it out.
What you can do right now
Here’s what we recommend to every business we speak to across Surrey and Egham:
Audit your current systems – What services still run over analogue lines?
Check your broadband – You may need to upgrade to FTTP or a leased line.
Talk to your IT support provider – (That’s us!) We’ll help you map out a smooth switch.
Don’t leave it until 2026 – Trust us: you don’t want to be rushing this at the last minute.
