The big Switch-Off: What you need to know about the end of 3G

Did you know that the PSTN (landline network) isn't the only one being switched off? Just as it introduced us to affordable internet access, the 3G network—which brought us reliable mobile data—is also being phased out. If your business still relies on 2G or 3G services, keep reading to understand the "whys," "whats," and "whens" of this significant change in UK wireless connectivity.

Why is 3G being turned off?

To enhance the UK's mobile network, the major carriers (O2, Vodafone, EE, and Three) are retiring the old 3G network. This move allows them to boost network security, speed, and reliability. Shutting down outdated masts improves energy efficiency and cuts maintenance costs. More importantly, repurposing this bandwidth will supercharge 4G and 5G services, offering faster speeds and a better mobile experience for everyone.

When is it happening?

Back in 2020, the Government’s Telecoms Diversification Taskforce set a goal for all mobile network operators to turn off their 2G and 3G networks by the end of 2033. However, some changes are happening sooner than expected, with certain areas already experiencing 3G shutdowns. Here’s a quick rundown for each carrier:

- EE: EE’s 3G shutdown is well underway, with trials completed in 2023 and a plan to switch off most 3G services by March 2024.

- Vodafone: Vodafone has started shutting down 3G in several locations, aiming to complete the process by early 2024.

- O2: O2 plans to begin its 3G shutdown in 2025, with more details to come closer to the date.

- Three: Three intends to phase out 3G by the end of 2024, though specific progress updates are limited.

As for 2G, it will stay active until 2033, as it's still essential for certain infrastructure, including local councils and emergency services.

What do I need to do?

The great news is that most of you won't need to do much to prepare for the 2G/3G switch-off. Most modern consumer and business devices are already 4G compatible and will continue to function as usual. However, if you use IoT devices, CCTV cameras, lone worker alarms, or smart meters, these might still rely on 2G or 3G.
